Guatemala

Guatemala is one of the most stunning countries in the Americas, containing rolling mountains, rumbling volcanoes that remain active, and a West Coast that is among the most beautiful in the world. It's a hot-spot for many breeds, from the surfers that flock to Guatemala to enjoy those Pacific barrels to the history-lovers that admire the Mayan and Spanish histories of the country:

Capital City: Guatemala City

Language: Spanish

Currency: Guatemala Quetzal (GTQ). GTQ is currently 7 for 1 USD.

Power Adapter: In Guatemala the power sockets are of type A and B. The standard voltage is 120 V and the standard frequency is 60 Hz.

Crime & Safety: Rates of crime in Guatemala are very high. An average of 101 murders per week were reported in 2016, making the country's violent crime rate one of the highest in Latin America. The high rate of murder has been blamed on "a highly powerful criminal cartel", made up of politically connected retired military officers and linking with drug traffickers and other criminals.

Tourists should remain vigilant in larger cities such as Guatemala City, and practice the core principles of intelligent travel such as wearing a money belt, not dressing flashy, and sticking to well-known areas late at night. In smaller cities, such as the area around the Mayan city of Tikal, crime rates are significantly lower in comparison.

Emergency Number: 110 or 120 for the National Police and emergency situations.
