Iceland is the real story of "fire and ice", its landscape marred and shaped by millennia of ever-changing weather, glaciers and volcanoes seemingly constantly on the tipping point of eruption. It is a natural marvel, complete with the galactic light-show we know as the Northern Lights and one of the most abundant opportunities for photography in our world today. Iceland isn't a country for vacationers - it's a country for explorers. Just ask the Vikings.

Iceland isn't a massive country with countless metropolitan areas to conquer, but what it offers is virtually unattainable anywhere else in the world. It feels like an entirely different world, but isn't that what you want? There are a several different itineraries that will help you visit Iceland.

Depending on the length of your trip, and taking geographic proximity into account, the following are our recommended priorities:

4 days: Reykjavik and Blue Lagoon

6 days, add: Thingvellir National Park

8 - 10 days, add: Explore Vatnajökull National Park. Most hotel accommodations are south of the park, along the coast.

10 - 12 days, add: Akureyri

More: Consider return to Reykjavik for return flight, for both convenience and cost savings.

Essential Information

Language: While the official language is Icelandic, many of the citizens are multi-lingual and nearly everyone speaks English to some extent. English-speaking tourists will have no problem getting around.

Currency: Icelandic Krona (ISK). ISK is currently 11 for 1 USD, but don't let that fool you into thinking Iceland is cheap. It's far from it. Alcohol will cost a mint, and food won't be much less. Our advice? Stock up at Duty Free and keep reserves in your room. Pre-drink before you go out and limit yourself to a few beers once you're out. Same goes for food. If you're smart about the money spent, you'll absolutely love everything about Iceland.

Power Adapter: In Iceland the power sockets are of type F. The standard voltage is 230 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz.

Crime & Safety: A non-concern. Murder rate? Zero. Violent crime? Lowest in the world. Drug use? Lowest in the world. Iceland is very close to Utopia, which is why it's expensive!

Emergency Number: 112
