India

India is a country that contains within it unique worlds - from the bright, mystical, and enlightened to the maddeningly overcrowded, the only constant remains the warmth of the people. Well, and the food.

India is the 2nd most populated country in the world, and as is the case with any place with more than a billion people, there will be times of shock for any traveler. But, make no mistake - there's simply nowhere like India:

Capital City: New Delhi

Language: There are 23 official languages in India, both a testament to the diversity and depth of the people. Much of the population speaks multiple languages, including the more than 125 million English speakers and 75 million French speakers.

Currency: Indian Rupee (INR). Currently, the Ruppe is at 64 to 1 USD.

Power Adapter: In India the power sockets are of type C, D and M. The standard voltage is 230 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz

Crime & Safety: Speaking broadly, the only consistent danger to the common tourist is the immense overcrowding in large cities. The general "danger" here exists in the form of loose road regulations, rickshaws, cars, and streets that are incessantly packed with people. This is, and remains, the only primary concern for men. India really isn't known as a place where one might fear for their safety in other countries.

Women, however, are a bit different matter. It is true that there is a higher tolerance for the objectification of women, and thus solo female travelers in India will need to do so intelligently. Don't arrive in new cities at night, do your homework, dress appropriately, and always know about where you're staying and potential threats. Yet, this does remain primarily a threat that is contained to larger cities, and the further one travels South in the country the less crowded the country is, the more the land opens up, and you find yourself in splendid, safe territory.
