Fjords, cliffs, azure waterfalls and beautiful landscapes all await you when you travel to Norway. The land of the Vikings has come a long way, as now cities such as Oslo and Bergen thrive with the highest standards of living in the world.
Oslo - Norway's capital and most populous city, Oslo was founded in 1040 as a trading place by the former King of Norway, Harald Hardrada. Oslo is a popular place for tourists not only because of its status as the capital, but also its location in one of the warmest regions of the country.
Bergen - The second-largest city in Norway, Bergen, sits on the west coast of the country as a major shipping city - one of the most important in Europe, in fact. It's commonly thought of as the unofficial capital of "Western Norway".
Trondheim - The capital of Norway under the reign of the Vikings, until 1217, Trondheim is Norway's third-largest city that rests on the south shore of the Trondheim Fjord - one of the largest in Scandinavia.
Norwegian Fjords - One of the most beautiful natural wonders in the world, western Norway is a landscape scattered with beautiful fjords - long, narrow inlets from the sea running between high cliffs. These UNESCO-protected formations are a primary attraction in Norway.
Oslo-Bergen Railway - One of the most scenic train rides in the world, the Oslo-Bergen Railway is affordable and also very utilitarian, as it connects the two largest cities in Norway.
Northern Lights - The Northern Lights can be seen better the further one travels northward in Norway, and there are numerous tour groups and day excursions from the major cities that will give you a guided view of this fascinating display in the sky.
Lofoten Islands - Far north in Norway are the Lofoten Islands - an archipelago known for its remarkable scenery with dramatic mountains and peaks, open sea and sheltered bays, beaches and untouched lands.
Norway is a vast land with its primary attractions being quite spread from each other. However, there's plenty to fill a 10-12 day itinerary, if your primary interest remains in seeing only Norway, and foregoing the rest of Scandinavia.
Depending on the length of your trip, and taking geographic proximity into account, the following are our recommended priorities:
3 days: Oslo
6 days, add: Bergen (via Oslo-Bergen Railway)
8 - 10 days, add: Norwegian Fjords and Lofoten (consider a possible cruise option to see both)
10 - 12 days, add: return to Oslo, as return flights are rare and expensive outside of the capital.
More: Consider extending into Sweden or Denmark. This includes Stockholm (5 hours via train), Gothenburg (4 hours via train), or Copenhagen (7 hours via train).
This list assumes you're primarily interested in the Norway, but it's wise to note that from Norway you can see much of Scandinavia by train, car, and boat. This includes Copenhagen, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Estonia.
Language: Norwegian, but much of the population is multi-lingual, and nearly everyone speaks English. English speakers will have no problem getting around.
Currency: Norwegian Krone (NOK). NOK is currently 8.5 to 1 USD.
Power Adapter: In Norway the power sockets are of type F. The standard voltage is 230 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz.
Crime & Safety: Norway, in general, has one of the lowest crime rates in the world, and can be traveled to fearlessly while taking the normal precautions any traveler should take.
Emergency Number: 112
