Dining on the Danube – Barkert Bistro in Budapest

When we traveled to Budapest, just before COVID-19 changed everyone’s lives, we arrived late on a cold, rainy night in late November. Staying on the “Buda” side of the city (as you may know, Budapest is formerly two cities that were joined – Buda and Pest), we were limited in finding something to eat.

I was starving for gulyas, and we found a great place right along the Danube with great quality, outstanding service, all in a perfect location – just north of the Elisabeth Bridge. Barkert Bistro.

While our review of Barkert Bistro may be short, we’ll have to say that it was a highlight of our food experience in the city. First, it’s a beautiful establishment with truly great service. We tried unsuccessfully to speak what little Hungarian we learned before the trip, but everyone was accommodating, kind, and helpful – while speaking English.

Tracy and I mixed three dishes with a few drinks – steak tartar, gulyas/gulash, and a lamb shank in a brown mushroom sauce that was fall-off-the-bone tender. Everything we tasted was cooked perfectly, and we had an amazing experience.

If you’re staying in Budapest and you’re looking for a casual setting to enjoy near-gourmet food, travel over to the Buda side and make Barkert Bistro your first stop!
