Where to Stay in Arequipa
The Historic Center — Best for All Visitors
Arequipa’s historic center is compact, beautiful, and entirely appropriate for independent walking — unlike Lima, the city center is safe and pleasant for visitors. Staying within the center gives walking access to every major sight, the best restaurants, and the Plaza de Armas. The sillar colonial mansions that have been converted into boutique hotels give Arequipa accommodation a specific character — white stone courtyards, carved portals, and the quality of light specific to the Andean sun on volcanic stone. Yanahuara — Quieter and Residential
The Yanahuara neighborhood, northwest of the center across the Chili River gorge, is a quiet residential district with excellent views of El Misti volcano from its famous mirrador (viewpoint). A short taxi from the center; home to La Nueva Palomino and some of the best picanterías. A pleasant alternative base for visitors who want a slightly quieter and more local atmosphere. Best for: visitors staying three or more nights who want a neighborhood experience alongside the city center sightseeing.

- Confirm heating — Arequipa nights are cold year-round. As with Cusco, confirm that rooms have adequate heating, particularly in budget properties
