The birthplace of democracy and modern western civilization, there is no other experience such as Greece. From the Oracle of Delphi to the Parthenon and the Acropolis, traveling to Greece is a must on any bucket-list for the explorer that obsesses about who we are and from where we came. Explore the varied lands that make up Greece, and check-out everything from Athens to Santorini, Mykonos and especially Crete.
Cliff-top towns of Fira and Oia
Greece is particularly hard to navigate, considering it's a fairly spread-out collection of islands and archipelagos that are most affordably traveled between via ferries. Still, with the right planning you can see plenty in the birthplace of Democracy.
Depending on the length of your trip, and taking geographic proximity into account, here are our recommended priorities.
3 days: Athens
5 days, add: Hydra
7 days, add: Mykonos or Santorini
10 days, add: Heraklion
12 days, add: Olympia or Kalamata
14 days, add: Mount Parnassos and Delphi
Currency: Euro (EUR). EUR is currently 0.93 for 1 USD.
Power Adapter: In Greece the power sockets are of type C and F. The standard voltage is 230 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz.
Crime & Safety: First, don't drive in major cities in Greece. Driving laws are particularly lax, and streets are crowded with a mix of tourist and locals. Bikes, mopeds, cars, and walkers create a confusing scenario for those who aren't use to it, which can be quite unnerving.
Athens has seen it's fare share of crime, but Plaka remains a beautiful, quaint and safe area, as well as the best place to stay in Athens. There is an increase in minor crime in Athens over most of Europe, including pick-pocketing and theft, but it's still no less safe than big cities in the U.S. Stay vigilant, use a money belt, and most of all remain respectful to the local people and culture.
