Allianz Travel Insurance Review: Is It Worth the Cost?

Allianz Travel Insurance is one of the most widely sold travel insurance products in the United States and the one most frequently offered as an add-on when booking flights, hotels, and package tours. Its ubiquity raises a reasonable question: is Allianz good because it is genuinely the best option, or is it simply the most marketed one? The honest answer is that Allianz produces solid, reliable travel insurance with good financial backing and a claims process that is more straightforward than many competitors — but it is not always the best value for every traveler type, and understanding its specific strengths and limitations produces a more informed purchase than buying it by default.

Who Is Allianz Travel Insurance?

Allianz Travel Insurance is the US-facing travel insurance arm of Allianz SE, the German multinational financial services company that is one of the largest insurance companies in the world by revenue. The financial backing is significant: unlike smaller travel insurance underwriters whose solvency could be questioned in a catastrophic claims year, Allianz has the capital reserves to honor claims at scale. This matters more than most travelers realize when choosing travel insurance — the policy is only as good as the company’s ability to pay claims.

Allianz Plan Options

OneTrip Basic — the entry-level plan covering trip cancellation and interruption, emergency medical, and baggage loss at the lowest price point. Suitable for domestic travel or short international trips where the primary concern is cancellation coverage rather than medical evacuation.

OneTrip Prime — the most popular plan, adding cancel for any reason coverage as an optional upgrade, higher medical limits, and additional covered reasons for cancellation beyond the basic plan. This is the plan most travelers purchasing for international trips should evaluate first.

OneTrip Premier — the highest tier for single trips, with the highest coverage limits across all categories and the most comprehensive covered reasons list. Appropriate for expensive trips, cruises, or any trip where the total prepaid investment is significant.

AllTrips Annual Plans — annual policies covering multiple trips throughout the year. For travelers who take three or more international trips per year, the annual plan typically produces better value than purchasing individual trip policies.

What Allianz Covers Well

Trip cancellation and interruption coverage is Allianz’s strongest product element. The covered reasons list is comprehensive — illness, injury, death of a traveler or family member, severe weather, natural disaster, jury duty, military deployment, and others — and the claims process for these standard covered reasons is well-documented and generally efficient.

Allianz’s 24-hour assistance line — staffed by multilingual agents who can help coordinate medical care, arrange emergency evacuation, locate lost documents, and provide other crisis support — is one of the strongest elements of the product and one that distinguishes it from bare-bones insurance products that provide coverage without genuine travel assistance.

Where Allianz Falls Short

Pre-existing medical condition coverage is Allianz’s most significant limitation. To qualify for pre-existing condition coverage, you must purchase the policy within 14 days of making your first trip payment. The pre-existing condition look-back period is 120 days — any condition treated or showing symptoms during the 120 days before your policy purchase date is considered pre-existing and excluded unless you meet the 14-day purchase requirement.

Cancel for any reason coverage — which allows you to cancel for any reason and receive 80 percent of your prepaid non-refundable costs back — is available as an upgrade but must be purchased within 14 days of initial trip payment and adds approximately 40 to 50 percent to the base premium.

Allianz vs World Nomads

Allianz wins for travelers over 66 — World Nomads has an age cap and is unavailable to older travelers. Allianz also wins for travelers with significant prepaid trip costs who primarily need cancellation protection.

World Nomads wins for adventure travelers — the standard policy covers a broader range of adventure activities including many extreme sports that Allianz excludes. World Nomads also wins for travelers who want to extend coverage mid-trip.

Is Allianz Worth It?

Yes, for most travelers purchasing standard comprehensive travel insurance from a financially sound company with a documented claims history. The most important purchase decision is timing — buying within 14 days of initial trip payment maximizes your coverage options and activates the pre-existing condition waiver. Buying close to departure leaves you with a narrower product than the same policy purchased at deposit time.

For escorted tour travelers specifically — Trafalgar, Globus, Viking, Collette — Allianz’s OneTrip Prime or Premier plans provide appropriate coverage for the trip cancellation, medical, and evacuation scenarios most relevant to group tour travel.
